Guided Meditation Series

8 Tuesdays, 9:00-10:00am
October 2nd- Nov 20th
Instructor: Nicole Stumpf

Beginning is often the hardest part of any endeavor. Join Nicole in this 8-week series to explore meditation techniques from around the world and jumpstart your own meditation practice.

Studies at Harvard University found that just eight weeks of meditation rebuilds the gray matter of your brain that supports learning and memory. The National Institute of Health has written that meditation increases activity in the parasympathetic nervous system, which is associated with a state of relaxation. A study at the University of Wisconsin in Madison found that “mindfulness meditation” improves both our mood and the strength of our immune system. There are dozens more scientific and peer-reviewed studies that agree: meditation can change your life for the better.

According to yoga philosophy, balance, health, and ease always exist at our core and are elements of our true nature. Life, however, can shift us out of alignment, especially as the seasons change. A Yoga Reset can help experience balance, alignment and ease in your body and mind. In this month's class, we will explore the healing potentials of breathing fully, relaxing deeply, and letting go.

To ensure you have a spot in the class, pre-registration is recommended.

This class is appropriate for all levels.

About the Instructor: Paula Labbe completed her 200-hr vinyasa yoga teacher training at The Yoga Shop in CT and is registered with Yoga Alliance. Her goal is to make yoga accessible for everyone.

In her yoga classes she strives to bring the joy and peace of yoga to her students through creative sequencing, connecting movement with breath, and maintaining a lighthearted atmosphere in an open, nonjudgmental environment. From her perspective the goal isn’t doing the perfect pose, it is learning the pose and doing it to our own bodies abilities, finding love and peace within ourselves, and enjoying the journey that is yoga.

Exploring the Throat Chakra

11:00 AM11:00

Exploring the Throat Chakra

When we are in energetic alignment at the level of the throat chakra, we have access to conscious presence, patience, steadiness of mind for self-study, and ultimately, wisdom and bliss.

While these qualities are ALWAYS available to each of us, the stress, abuses, and trauma we experience as we journey through the life can make these states a challenge to access.

Imbalance at the level of the throat chakra can manifest as feelings of fragmentation, despair, and unhappiness.  That feeling of being on an emotional rollercoaster is an expression of an imbalance at this level of our being.  These challenges can also present themselves at the level of the physical body as a sore throat, tonsillitis, neck pain, thyroid problems, hearing problems and metabolic disorders.

In this workshop, we will learn to attune to this sacred energy center within our throat through meditation, asana, and breathing exercises.  We will also discuss other healing tools and foods we can weave into our life to support our healing journey.

All are welcome! No experience with Yoga is necessary.

Exploring the Heart Chakra

11:00 AM11:00

Exploring the Heart Chakra

When we are in energetic alignment at the level of the heart chakra, we have access to open-heartedness, trust, gratitude, compassion, forgiveness, connectedness, generosity, cheerfulness, the ability appreciate of beauty and celebrate, a sense of awe and unconditional love. These are all qualities of a radiant and balanced heart chakra.

While these qualities are available to each of us, the stress, abuses, and trauma we experience as we journey through the life can make these states of being a challenge to connect with. When we are wounded, we might experience this energy center as deficient or excessive. This can lead to feelings of hard-heartedness, distrust, resentment, loneliness and sadness to name a few. These challenges can manifest at the level of the mind as depression, anxiety and fear of closeness, as well as at the level of the body, as breathing problems, heart disease, high blood pressure and chest pain.

In this workshop, we will learn to attune to this sacred energy center within our chest, contemplate the ways in which we may have been wounded in the past, and explore ways to find health, healing, and wholeness in the present moment through meditation, breathing exercises and yoga postures.

All are welcome! No experience with Yoga is necessary.

Pop-Up Yoga Class with Sylvia

Pop-Up Yoga Class with Sylvia

A 60-minute flowing Vinyasa class using the breath to facilitate a moving meditation. Accessible for all levels with variations for more advanced practitioners. Class will be followed by a short guided meditation and time to hear more about the yoga retreat Sylvia is hosting in Kenya in February.

Cost: $10

Email: stumpfyoga@gmail.com to sign up

About the Instructor: Sylvia started more regularly practicing yoga during her years living in Kenya. The practice was a constant that she was able to keep coming back to to challenge her perspective, spark personal reflection, and soften her heart. Over time, her mat became a place where the worries and anxieties of the day all fell away for one sacred hour. A place where she could stop, take a step back, and look at herself and others in a new light. A place where she decided to love others and herself more fully. With the help of extraordinary teachers at Stanton Street Yoga and The Ayurveda Health Retreat in Alachua, Florida, yoga became a means to open her heart and make it an instrument for fostering compassion in this world. Sylvia is honored to share this special place on her mat with her students. Her classes pair yoga philosophy with flowing breath and movement for an experience that consumes the body and the mind. Sylvia hopes she can use yoga to bring attention to how, and with what intention, her students practice, providing them the opportunity to choose things that serve on and off the mat.

Finding Balance in Times of Change

A Donation-Based Workshop with Jen Maffett

All Proceeds Benefit the Women's Shelter in Bath.

A good friend of mine used to keep this statement on his white board: "the only constant is change." The fact that it was written on a white board, and therefore temporary, was weirdly comforting.

Change happens all the time. But things like disturbances to your favorite grocery store aisle, relationship transformations, career fluctuations and even modifications to world leadership can really shake up your day. In this interactive workshop we will help each other learn to deal with change in healthy, positive ways while building a more flexible approach to life and all it throws our way.

I would like people to walk away from the class with:

--A general understanding of how people react to changes ... both small ones and big ones.

--A way to approach change in a positive and healthy way, using tools that we will talk about

--An understanding of some mental and physical exercises that you can do to help get balanced when faced with change

About Jen: I've survived corporate life, a chaotic marriage, cancer, the challenges (and joys!) of parenting -- sometimes singlehandedly -- and along the way I rerouted my life to become a farmer and a certified health counselor. By learning to live simply and simply live well, I've learned a few things about change that I'd love to share. I hope you'll join me!

Donations: There is no cost to attend this workshop. Instead, you are invited to bring a donations for the women's shelter in Bath. 1They need clothing, kitchen items, toys and toiletries (unopened). Donations by check are also accepted.

Snacks: Light snacks will be provided.

Registration:  To register or ask questions, contact Jen Maffett:  jpmaffett@gmail.com

Arm Balances w/ Peter & Nicole

11:30 AM11:30

Arm Balances w/ Peter & Nicole

Join Kripalu Yoga Instructors Peter & Nicole for a 2-hour workshop exploring balance, strength, creativity, and fun in yoga arm balances. The postures we plan to examine and practice include:

Crow (Bakasana)

Revolved Crow (Parsva Bakasana)

Firefly (Titthibhasana)

Feathered Peacock Pose (Pincha Mayurasana)

& 8-Angled Pose (Ashtavakrasana)

In this workshop, we will first warm up with a vinyasa sequence to prepare the body for the more complex postures. Then, we will deconstruct the select yoga asanas into key alignment elements to understand how the joints are aligned and which muscles should be contracting and which should be lengthening. Finally, we'll practice tying them all together for the finished pose.

Even if you are unable to find the fullest expression of the posture in the workshop, you will be able to identify exactly where you can build strength or invite flexibility in order to practice the pose safely.

The joy, of course, is in the practice, not the perfection, of the postures.

Cost: FREE
